The lot features a rare authentic original Crow Spontoon War Tomahawk dating to circa 1890 and has provenance as being later sold from the Historic Lammers Trading Post in Hardin, Montana. The piece was authenticated and sold by Skinner Inc. Auction Co. in their Discovery Country Americana Sale Number 2497 on 3/17/2010 (with Skinner’s calling this piece a Northern Plains Tomahawk from the Lammers Trading Post in Hardin, Montana, a listing screenshot is shown for provenance). The excellent war club features a hand forged spontoon style head pounded out from a thin piece of sheet iron and pounded around a round eye hole drift. One of the curls had been broke off many years ago and was re-attached with a rivet, with the repair being very old, from circa early 1900’s. The hardwood haft is adorned with a wrap of tarnished wire, brass tacks, and a wrap of otter fur ending in long thin drops with beads and fringe. The piece was likely used many years later during the reservation period as a dance object and shows a total length of 26.5 inches long by 10 inches wide and has an additional 33-inch-long drop. The tomahawk exhibits minor oxidation and expected wear to the head and haft from age and use, and is in very good condition. Provenance: Previously sold by Skinner’s Auction Co. and North American Auction Co. and was collected from the White Swan Family collection in Colorado. Truly an early and unique authentic piece.
