This is an excellent Crow Native American Indian inlaid catlinite pipe and quilled stem. The piece dates to the late 19th century. The pipe features a T-shaped bowl with a dark maroon coloration having patches of pink showing through and an artful inlaid silver pewter accent along three sections. The flat wood stem is exquisitely carved and shows traces of early mineral paint with a section or porcupine quillwork and old silk trade ribbons. The piece has been pictured in the 2009 publication/book “The Mark Francis Collection of American Indian Art” page 60 figure 104. Provenance: From the personal collection of renowned collector and foremost expert on war clubs and tomahawks, Mark Francis. The Francis collection piece has been authenticated, verified, and published. This is an excellent representation of an early Crow piece and the circa late 19th century authentic pipe shows exquisite craftsmanship. Truly a museum quality artifact. The stem measures 1.5" x 19" and the catlinite bowl measures 4.25" x 7.25".
