Composite U.S. Springfield Model 1863 Single Shot Percussion Three-Band Rifled Musket, NVSN, .58 cal., 40'' round steel rifled barrel, steel furniture. Lockplate with spread-wing American eagle to left of standard ''U.S./Springfield'' marking, ''1863'' angled behind hammer. Composite features appear to be a front barrel band with stacking swivel, middle barrel band without flat retaining spring, an unusual breech section that appears to have been replaced, no barrel proofmarks, a non-standard nipple bolster lacking the eagle marking but with a clean-out screw and face plate, and no ''US'' marking on buttplate tang. Condition is good to very good, showing lightly patinated bright metal. Walnut fullstock is sound and very good, with good color and a clear ''ESA'' within oval inspector's cartouche on side opposite lock, minor bumps and dings, and a later coat of varnish. Action is smooth and strong; bore appears clean with sharp rifling. Est.: $400-$600. (Antique)
