This is an exceptional example of a very scarce all original and complete British L42A1 Sniper rifle rig. These rifles were developed in the mid-1960s using the original WWII British Enfield No 4 MK 1 (T) sniper rifle as the base weapon and were replaced by the L96A1 rifle in the mid 1990s. It is estimated that only 800 rifles total were ever produced with approximately 400 imported by Navy Arms in the mid 1990s with all remaining rifles destroyed by the British Government. The conversion process entailed stripped the original rifles to the bare action, installing brand new, heavy weight, hammer forged barrels, chambered in 7.62 NATO, along with a new high pressure bolt head, (correctly marked and proofed for 19T). They also installed new shorter length, redesigned handguards to free-float the barrels for improved accuracy. The left side of the butt socket is marked with the old markings of: "M47C/1945/35167R/TR" and the left side of the receiver has the new markings of "L42A1D71/T". The old No. 32 MKIII scopes were completely stripped, rebuilt and recalibrated for the 7.62 NATO round, with the original WWII scope markings of; TEL. STG. 32MK3/OS2039A" lined out, with new NATO markings of; "OS2429 G.A./TELSTRT.STG.L1A/1240-99-963-2063" applied to the tube. The original matching scope mount was retained and now shows both the original rifle serial number and the same restamped serial number, with the rings numbered,72 and 73 respectively. The scope is complete with an original set of British L42 leather scope covers, marked on the side of the strap "V5/1240-99-961-7423 along with the British Broad arrow proofmark. The scope and mount are housed in a late production No.8 metal scope can dated 1955 and on the top of the lid has been stenciled "TELE SIGHT L1A1/24924" and inside the lid it was hand painted with the rifle serial number (R35167). Also inside the lid a new set of instructions for adjusting the telescope has been glued in. The buttstock is made of walnut and the handguards and cheekpiece are made from beech or hardwood. The rifle itself is complete with a military "MRT/APR 1977" marked leather sling, and one 10 round magazine. The rifle is housed in the original British issue green painted wooden storage chest, that has the matching rifle and scope serial numbers stenciled on the lid and end panel (both matching). The storage chest is complete the original WWII British, three-draw Scout/Sniper telescope and leather scope case, a small cleaning kit with plastic oiler, pull rope bore cleaner, bore brush and tool, and a ridged fiberglass Parker Hale cleaning rod, a "J. Parker/Birmingham" marked wooden chamber cleaning rod, along with the rare "IWS" mounting bracket for the British night vision scope. Also included is a reproduction of the original manual dated 1971 titled; "Rifles, 7.62mm, L42A1 and L39A1 and TELESCOPES, STRAIGHT, SIGHTING L1A1 & SCOUT REGIMENT" and a copy of an original 1980 British Snipers log book/record sheet. The log book is new and unissued.
