Colt model 1855 Root sporting rifle, .44 caliber percussion, 21-1/8” barrel, blued finish, varnish walnut stock, with rare folding tang peep sight, serial #599 and showing unusual cylinder latch screw mounted on the left side of the frame. Pictured in The Book of Colt Firearms by Sutherland and Wilson, page 192. The carbine shows approx. 75-85% original blue finish, some erosion and pitting mostly on the cylinder, rear of breech, top of frame, and firing areas. The Colt markings on top of frame are good and visible. Most of patent date on 6-shot cylinder is visible. There is some scattered areas of bright blue. The varnish wood stocks are very good with some small losses by the rammer, some dings, mars, scratche mostly on the forend. The buttstock is considerably better with just some minor scratches, minor marks. The action is working, but not perfectly. An original to the period ramrod is retained and a original 3-leaf rear sight and high rise front sight and front barrel dovetail. A significant variation with good provenance as being pictured in the key Colt book. Purchased from noted firearms dealer Alan S. Kelley, 1979, with original receipt and advertisement. Mr.
