Colt model 1855 Root Revolver, Fifth variation, .31 caliber percussion, fluted cylinder, period scroll engraved through blue, period standard wood grips, serial #5567. The pistol is contained in an original to the period velveteen lined percussion case with accessories. The revolver shows 20-30% original blue drifting to brown, good barrel address and patent markings. The grips show some small losses at the rear, some edge wear, and about 40% varnish and would be very good except for the losses, so we rate them as good. There is some bright blue in protected areas. The action is not quite working. The engraving is hand cut and 19th century in style and execution, but not a known or identifiable engraver. The origi to the period case is in fair condition showing a broken partition that needs rebluing, some fading and fraying and is fair to good and would improve with careful restorations. An eagle flask in fair condition is retained and a .31 caliber brass Root mold in fair to good condition is also included. The exterior of the case is good with some small nicks, mars, a couple of age cracks, but generally good. Est: $2,000 - $4,000
