Colt Woodsman pre-war .22 caliber semi-automatic pistol, factory engraved with deluxe fancy checkered pattern grips showing deep inset colt medallions, serial number 4821. Factory letter confirms blue finishshipped to W.H. Gough, engraver, Hartford, Connecticut, May 9th 1917, four guns in shipment with grips not listed. Under remarks the factory letter indicates the engraver W.H. Gough was a master Colt firearmsengraver and it was returned to the factory and reshipped April 20, 1919 with no information on shipping location or engraving at that time. It is Joe Kiser’s opinion and this catalogers that the letter indicatesshipment to Gough the engraver and return by him authenticates it was factory engraved (the records are not perfect and very hard to read). The grips are very unusual and absolutely genuine Colt products of theperiod. The pistol retains approximately 505 to 70% original blue that is evenly drifting and thinning at the edges and handling areas, particularly the straps.
