Colt Special percussion musket, .58 cal., 39-1/2” barrel, bright finish, crisp action, sharp markings, lockplate and barrel both dated 1864, three barrel bands, ramrod under barrel, blued rear two position flip-up sight, wood stock with two sharp inspector’s cartouches on left side above trigger group; sharp V, P and eagle head markings on left side of barrel at breech along with “M.N.M.” initials; D, M and L inspector initials on trigger guard; Z stamped in wood behind trigger guard; E.M.W. initials in wood on top of stock comb in front of steel butt plate with M initial over U.S. marking on top of butt plate; H stamped at back of upper barrel tang; H also stamped on left side of rear sight base; proper U stamps on barrel bands, L stamp on flare of ramrod. This Colt musket is in overall excellent condition showing most of its bright finish with some scattered light browning and spotting on barrel from handling; fine bore, crisp action and markings, excellent wood with only a couple small mars from storage.
