U.S. Contract Colt Single Action Army revolver manufactured in 1874 and subsequently refurbished into artillery configuration. This early production Single Action revolver was altered to "Artillery" configuration with five-inch barrel sometime after 1895 and was overhauled by Colt for issue to U.S. Army units in the Philippines in 1902. The barrel, ejector housing, trigger guard, back strap and cylinder have the commercial blue finish applied during the Colt 1900-1903 overhauls of Single Action Artillery Model revolvers. The frame, loading gate and hammer have a casehardened finish. The one-piece walnut grip is oil finished. The ejector housing has the early "bullseye" head and the hammer is the cavalry pattern with elongated, bordered, knurling on the spur. The revolver has the typical combination of mixed serial number components and replacement parts added during overhaul. The barrel was replaced by Colt during the 1902 overhaul. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the legend "COLT'S PT. F.A. MFG. Co. HARTFORD CT. U.S.A." in one line. The underside of the barrel is stamped with the Ordnance Sub-Inspector mark "RAC" and a "P" proof mark just ahead of the frame. The Colt replacement barrel is correctly not serial numbered. The cylinder is a Colt replacement and is stamped with the Ordnance Sub-Inspection mark "R.A.C." on the rear face between the chambers. The side of the cylinder correctly is not stamped with the Sub-inspection mark, proof mark and serial number. The left side of the frame is roll-stamped with the Colt, "Two-date/Two-Line", 1871 and 1872 patent markings followed by the "US" property mark. The loading gate is stamped with the assembly number "1397". The serial number, "9470" is stamped on the bottom of the frame. The trigger guard is numbered "131731" and the back strap is numbered "18/890". The lower left heel of the grip is stamped with the date "1902" above the Ordnance Inspector's mark which consists of the script initials "OCH" in a rectangle with rounded ends. The Ordnance Sub-Inspector's script initials "RAC" are stamped in a rectangle with rounded ends on the lower right side of the grip. A small "R.A.C." Sub-inspection mark is stamped on the left heel of the grip.

The barrel address, proof mark and sub-inspection mark are sharp. The cylinder has light-moderate handling wear with one small spot of light pitting between the chambers. The trigger guard and back strap show light handling wear. The frame and hammer retain 70% of the casehardened finish with strong case colors. The Colt patent dates and "US" property mark are sharp. The frame screws have most of the niter blue finish. The grip is in fine condition with almost no handling wear. The date, final inspection mark and Sub-inspection mark are crisp. The action is tight and functions perfectly. This is a fine example of a Colt Single Action Artillery Model revolver that was overhauled by Colt in 1902.
