Colt Single Action Army revolver, US Cavalry series, martially marked and inspected, in Custer range, serial #7837. Barrel period shortened to 3-3/4”, crude cylinder pin fabricated from screwdriver. Wood grips, with period western holster altered for this pistol. The single action shows a partial italic barrel address, the barrel number matches, frame matches, trigger guard matches, and butt matches. The grips are good and have a great fit, show wear at the edges, and an old repair to the right toe where the piece that was chipped out was carefully nailed back in. The metal surfaces show a grey patina with traces of finish, some erosion and scattered pinprick pitting, generally good edges, correct military hammer. The front of the muzzle shows a dovetail for a front sight that is now removed. The bore is good, generally good overall. The holster was form-fitted to this single action by shrinking it and adding two brass rivets. A very interesting Ainsworth single action that was period converted to a gunfighter rig and is similar to the shortening of single action #179, pictured 171, Cavalry and Artillery Revolvers by Kopec. An interesting and real frontier piece. Est: $1,500 -
