Colt Single Action Army revolver, U.S. issued and J inspected, serial #17634. Refer "A Continuing Study of the Colt Single Action Revolver" by John Kopec where this exact revolver is mentioned. The serial numberfalls into a group of revolvers, according to Kopec, which were issued to the 7th Cavalry. It is theorized that they were replacements for pistols lost at The Little Big Horn. This revolver #17634 falls between two 7thCavalry identified examples, #17586 and #17647, and in Mr. Kopec's letter which is included, he states there is a good probability that this single action was 7th Cavalry issued. Kopec further states in hisletter that the only deviation from originality is that the barrel was shortened to 4-3/4" and the action rebuilt. He further states the revolver has its J marked ejector assembly, the script barrel address showsproper die breaks which are consistent with this serial number range. The revolver remains in fair to good condition showing a gray patina finish with light to slightly heavy scattered erosion and pitting. The
