Colt Single Action Army revolver U.S. Calvary series inspected by J. T. C., serial number 31610 and factory letter states delivered to government inspector at Colt plant November 21st 1876 and under remarks the letter further states that the revolver was returned for refurbishing to the Colt plant and re-shipped to U.S. Government inspector October 4th 1895. This revolver shows strong traces of military blue in protected areas and at top of rear of frame where there is also bright case hardening. Approximately 10% blue and case hardening is remaining within a lightly cleaned gray patina. The front sight has been slimmed slightly. The grips fit perfectly and only show some wear at the edges and the initials B.M. carved on the bottom of the right grip and also 11 engagement or kill notches cut on the back of right grip. The grips show no visible inspection marks but fit impeccably and are the original. The barrel address and two line patent date are very visible and the U.S. is slightly light. The barrel and cylinder show J.T.C. inspection marks. The barrel shows a matching serial number underneath the ejector rod housing along with correct inspections and the ejector rod housing shows a brass spring with donut head on ejector rod and considerable blue beneath housing. The housing is perfectly fitted to this revolver and undoubtedly the original with correct early stud. The action is good and the bore is near excellent. The edges are crisp. The hammer shows considerable original color. This revolver is recorded on page 49 of “Calvary and Artillery Revolvers” by Kopec and Fenn where it is listed on a list of New York Militia revolvers with J.T.C. inspections. These all matching “Artillery revolvers” are an interesting and rare variation and this is one of the best we have examined. Gale Kennedy Historical West Collection. Est.: $5,000-$10,000.
