Colt Single Action Army revolver, 7-1/2”, .45 caliber, fully Nimschke style New York scroll engraved, with Mexican associated 1851 Navy brass backstrap and triggerguard, later hard-rubber grips, serial #22400 in a series of early known Nimschke engraved single actions that went to Hartley & Graham in 1875. Refer Colt Engraving, pages 220 – 223 for several similar engraved examples. This single action came up from Mexico many yearsago and was held in the hands of the decedents of the original owner who had used it down South. The family story was that it was buried for a long period of time hiding it from the authorities and bandits and itwas lost for many years until it was found in the ground. The Navy triggerguard serial number 170829, matching to the backstrap, and turn of the century hard-rubber Single Action grips have been added. The frame,hammer, cylinder, barrel, and ejector rod housing are all matching to the frame number. The metal surfaces show a dark brown patina with a lot of silver plate turned blue and a full italic barrel address. The brass straps
