Colt Single Action Army revolver, .45 Colt cal., 7-1/2" barrel, blue and case hardened finish, original to-the-period high relief carved Mexican snake and eagle grips, serial #176256, made about 1896-1897. The revolvershows 30-50% original blue and case hardening, evenly thinning and toning with some light beginning erosion and pinprick pitting, good sharp edges and markings, with some areas of bright colors still showing. There is a reverse E stamp at the left front of frame, directly across from the caliber marking, and the stamp may be an F and E letter combined. The grips are very well carved and fit nicely, small losses at theedges and toes, and 1 large repair at the back of right grip, which is well done. The grips show the higher screw hole location and are probably by Hartley & Graham or other New York ally. The markings are sharp, theedges are crisp, the front sight is its full height, the action good, the bore bright. We have seen this "E" stamp on a dozen guns in the southwest over the last 40 years, but are not aware of its significance. Est.:
