Colt Second Model Dragoon Revolver

Estimate: $4500 - 6500
This is an example of a Colt Second Model Dragoon revolver that was manufactured in 1851. The revolver has the combination of square-back trigger guard and rectangular cylinder stops that identify it as a Second Model Dragoon. This commercial revolver has traces of silver plating on the brass trigger guard and back strap and a varnished one-piece walnut grip. The barrel and cylinder originally had a blue finish and the loading lever, frame and hammer were color casehardened. The part-round/part-octagon barrel has a nickel-silver front sight blade. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped "-ADDRESS SAML COLT NEW-YORK CITY-". "COLTS/PATENT" is roll-stamped in two lines on the left side of the frame. The cylinder is roll-engraved with the Ranger and Indian fight scene and "MODEL U.S.M.R./COLT'S PATENT". The matching serial number is stamped in small numerals on the bottom of the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard, loading lever, cylinder pin, cylinder and back strap. The wedge is un-numbered. Colt manufactured 2,700 Second Model Dragoon Revolvers in 1850-1851. A large percentage of these revolvers were manufactured for the Army. Commercial production Second Model Dragoon Revolvers are scarce.

The roll-engraved Ranger and Indian fight scene is light but legible. The grip is good with scattered light handling marks on the sides. Most of the original varnish finish remains.
