This is an example of a Colt Model 1839 Carbine that was manufactured at Colt's Paterson, New Jersey, factory circa 1840-1841. This standard model carbine has a part-round/part beveled smoothbore barrel with brazed lug. The right side of the barrel lug has a factory loading lever with a guide stud that encircles the rammer. The barrel has a pin front sight and dovetail mounted block rear sight. The right side of the barrel lug is roll-stamped with the one-line legend "-Patent Arms M'g. Co. Paterson, N.J.-Colt's Pt.-" with a "snake" and "star" terminal at each end of the marking. The 2 1/2-inch six shot cylinder has a round back and is roll stamped "PATENT ARMS MAN'Y/Patterson JERSEY/COLT'S PATENT" with three roll engraved oval panels depicting a hunting scene, a naval battle and a land battle. The frame has a flared recoil shield and scroll trigger guard. The recoil shield has a capping notch in the upper right corner. The stock is walnut with an iron buttplate. This carbine is fitted with a well-made cavalry style sling bar on the right stock wrist. The iron 5-inch sling bar is attached to an iron tang inletted into the left stock wrist. The tang/sling bar is attached to the stock by two screws that run through the wrist and are fitted to round iron escutcheons on the right side of the stock. Although the sling bar appears to be blacksmith work, the design, execution and installation are professional and functional. The stock has a hairline crack in the right wrist and the sling bar could have been installed on the carbine to repair and reinforce the stock wrist. The serial number "770", is located on the bottom of the two-groove wedge, on the rear face of the barrel lug, on the rear face of the cylinder and on the cylinder turning ring. All of the visible serial numbers match. The Model 1839 Carbine was the most successful of the Colt Paterson firearms; total production was less than 950 guns.
BBL: 24 Inch port round
Stock: walnut

Finish: blue/brown

Serial Number: 770
Condition: About good. The carbine is of stock configuration with exception of the added period sling bar. There is an even dark brown patina on the barrel, frame, cylinder, sling bar and buttplate. The legend on the right side of the barrel lug and the "COLT PATENT" markings on the cylinder are sharp. Traces of the delicate battle and hunting scenes are visible on the cylinder. The walnut stock is good with the exception of the repaired crack in the right wrist. The loading lever is a modern replacement. Colt Model 1839 Carbines were highly sought after functional firearms that typically saw considerable service - this period modified Model 1839 Carbine could very well have been used by a U.S. Dragoon or Texas Ranger during the Mexican War.
