This Colt Model 1883 Double Barrel Shotgun has the factory letter that describes the shotgun as: "12 Gauge", with 30 inch barrel, blue finish and "wood" stock. The letter states that the shotgun was "Grade Configuration 1" and was shipped to "Hibbard, Spencer, Bartlett & Company" in Chicago, Illinois on April 13, 1889. The shotgun has Damascus barrels with a raised, serrated rib. The top of the rib is roll-stamped: "COLT'S PT. F.A. MFG. CO. HARTFORD CT. U.S.A.". The shot gun has double triggers and a sliding thumb safety on the tang. The receiver, tang, trigger guard and forearm latch are decorated with double line borders. The underside of the frame is engraved: "PATENTED" in an arch above "AUG. 22 SEP. 19. 1882". The serial number "4178" is engraved on the lower tang behind the trigger guard. The straight grain walnut stock and forearm are checkered and have a varnish finish. The stock has a pistol grip with black hard rubber cap, oval cheekpiece and black, checkered, hard rubber buttplate with the Rampant Colt trademark embossed in a circle. The Model 1883 Shotgun was one of Colt's finest products and was produced in limited numbers (7366 shotguns) between 183 and 1895.

Condition: Fine as period customized. The shotgun has a silver-gray patina with traces of the original case colors on the sides of the frame. The markings and engraving are crisp. The forearm checkering has heavy handling wear; the forearm has an old repair at the tip and has been re-varnished. The period custom butt stock has a cheekpiece and the pistol grip has heavy, double-line checkering. The lower tang has been broken and repaired. Mechanically excellent. This is a solid example of a scarce and desirable Colt Model 1883 Hammerless Double Barrel Shotgun.
