Colt Model 1871-72 Open Top revolver manufactured in 1871. The revolver has the distinctive rear sight on the barrel breech, straight, non-rebated cylinder, loading gate attached by a screw at the base of the gate and rimfire firing pin attached to the left side of the hammer by two rivets. The hammer spur has bordered, under-lined knurling. The barrel has an S-curve contour; the ejector housing is attached by a screw in the left side of the lug and the face of the ejector rod head has concentric rings. The revolver has a brass back strap with smaller, Navy-sized, one-piece, ivory grip. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped: "-ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA-" in one line. The left side of the frame is roll-stamped with the "COLTS/PATENT" markings found on the first 1000 Model 1871-72 revolvers. The cylinder is roll-engraved with the Texas Navy battle scene and "COLTS PATENT NO". The serial number, "54" is stamped on the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard, back strap and cylinder. All of the serial numbers match. Manufactured in limited numbers, the Colt Model 1871-72 Open Top revolver was the direct predecessor to the Colt Single Action Army revolver and is a key and hard to find piece for any collection of Colt revolvers.
BBL: 7 1/2 inch
Stock:
Gauge: 44 RF
Finish: blue/casehardened
Grips: ivory
Serial Number: 54
Condition: Good. The revolver is completely original. The barrel, frame and cylinder have a silver-gray patina. The barrel and cylinder have scattered light pitting and the frame has some scattered age discoloration. The barrel markings and patent markings on the frame are sharp. The cylinder retains about 50% of the roll-engraved naval scene. The brass trigger guard and back strap have a good looking, un-polished, patina and show light scratches and handling marks. The serial numbers are crisp. The ivory grip is in good condition. The grip shows minimal shrinkage and has no chips. The ivory has yellowed from age and there is brown discoloration on the left side of the grip. The butt and left side of the grips have the usual hair-line age cracks. This is a solid, all original, example of a very early production Colt Model 1871-72 Open Top revolver.
