Manufactured circa 1872-1873, this was one of approximately 7,000 manufactured. The Model 1871-1872 was the first non-conversion Colt cartridge revolver, and was a direct predecessor of the wildly successful Single Action Army. The top of the barrel is marked "-- ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT NEW - YORK U.S. AMERICA --", the left side of the frame is marked with the two July 1871 and 1872 patent dates, the cylinder is roll engraved with the Texas naval scene and "COLTS PATENT No "702" and the complete serial number "1702" is marked on the barrel, frame, trigger guard and back strap. The loading gate is numbered "649". Blade front sight and the rear sight is an integral notch on the breech end of the barrel. Fitted with one-piece varnished walnut grip and steel Army-style grip frame.

Condition: Good as restored (barrel lengthened). The metal surfaces have a smooth gray patina, with a clear cylinder scene. A portion of the barrel has been polished over the barrel lengthening repair and the front portion of the address is faint. The grip has been revarnished and remains good with some wear on the lower edges and a few minor dents. The action is very good. Still, a solid representative example of the direct predecessor to the Colt Single Action Army revolver!
