Colt Model 1861 Navy Revolver with Thuer Conversion Cylinder

Manufactured in 1870, this Colt Model 1861 revolver has the Thuer cartridge conversion cylinder, which was Colt's first production of revolving firearms chambered for a metallic cartridge. The top of the barrel is marked with the one line New York U.S. America address, "COLTS/PATENT" on the left side of the frame and "36 CAL" on the left trigger guard shoulder. The cylinder is roll engraved with the Texas naval battle scene and marked "COLTS PATENT No 2235". The complete matching serial number is marked on the bottom of the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard and back strap, the partial serial number "4972" is marked on the cylinder pin. The wedge is un-numbered. The rear cylinder face and rear face of the conversion ring are marked "37". The Thuer conversion ring has a script "E" which denotes the eject position and is marked "PAT. SEP./15, 1868". The cylinder has been shortened to accommodate the conversion ring. The conversion ring has the distinctive knurled turning knob, rebounding firing pin, and ejection mechanism. Blue barrel and cylinder, casehardened frame, hammer and loading lever, and silver plated brass trigger guard and back strap. Brass blade front and hammer notch rear sights, and fitted with a replacement one-piece walnut grip.

Very good as partially refinished (cold blue touch up on the barrel) with traces of original blue present on the barrel and conversion ring in protected areas, and a mottled brown patina on the balance of the metal surfaces. The brass has been cleaned some time ago and is beginning to age. The undersize replacement grip is very good with some wear on the lower edges, and a few small minor dents and handling marks. The cylinder scene is 75% visible and the markings are clear. The action is a little tight, but functions properly.
