Manufactured 1856-1864. This is an example of a two digit serial Colt Model 1855 revolving carbine. Part of a line of revolver-type long arms which enjoyed some success, but in many ways was ahead of its time. The rifle is absent of any markings, except for the matching serial number which is marked on the bottom of the frame, trigger guard tang and on the toe of the buttplate. Brass blade front and three leaf folding rear sight, no bayonet provisions, steel rod, one barrel band with a sling swivel mounted on the forearm just ahead of the loading lever, 5-shot long fully fluted cylinder with under barrel racket type loading lever, smooth trigger, saddle ring and stud mounted on the left side of the receiver and side mounted hammer with checkered spur. Full forearm with brass end cap and straight grip stock with sling swivel mounted on the lower tang and iron carbine buttplate.
BBL: 21 inch part octagon
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 56 percussion
Finish: blue/casehardened
Grips:
Serial Number: 13
Condition: Poor. The metal surfaces have a mix of brown, dark brown and gray patina with some traces of the original blue finish in protected areas of the barrel along the edge of the forearm. The lower tang had been broken and repaired at the rear screw. There are some areas of the receiver that show signs of cleaning. The wood has had a coat of varnish applied some time ago and remains good with scattered minor dings and a crude filled repair on the modified forearm which is missing the middle barrel band. The action is fine.
