Colt Model 1855 Military Percussion Revolving Rifle
This is an example of a modified/altered Colt Model 1855 Military Rifle manufactured from 1856 to 1864. This particular rifle has a Root-type side hammer, iron trigger guard, six-shot fluted cylinder, ratchet-type loading lever and folding leaf rear sight absent of graduation markings. The two-piece stock and full forearm are walnut with an oil finish, an iron forend tip and a sling swivel on the front barrel band and on the lower stock tang. The left side of the frame is marked: "COLT'S PATENT" in a curve over "NOV. 24th, 1857" (the latter barely visible) and the only other visible marking is the serial number on the lower tang.
BBL: 27 inch round
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 44 percussion
Finish: blue/casehardened
Grips:
Serial Number: 2255
Condition: Fair as modified. The metal surfaces have been cleaned bright and there is some pitting on the frame cylinder and octagon portion of the modified shortened barrel. The crudely replaced buttstock and forearm wood has been sanded and refinished, and remains fair with some scattered minor dings and scratches. The barrel bands are a bit loose. The action is good.
