Colt Model 1851 Navy revolver .36 caliber percussion in very good original condition retaining considerable original blue and case hardening, serial number 82525 showing small trigger guard variation with large cut out. The left side of the barrel lug shows stamp W F & Co. EX 3. The stamp is neatly done and may be old but is impossible to authenticate as these pistols were purchased by agents from local stores then stamped. This pistol does come from a reputable collector who purchased it many years ago from noted dealer C.W. Slagle who believed it to be authentic. The barrel shows 10% to 20% original blue mostly on the left barrel lug drifting to a brown patina with some scattered light to moderate erosion and pinprick pitting. The barrel address is sharp and the edges are crisp. Most of the pitting occurs on the right front side of the barrel from being carried in a holster. The cylinder shows 30% to 60% original scene going light but still good. The frame, hammer and lever show 30% to 50% case hardening within a silvery gray patina and some color. The straps show a trace of silver gone to a natural brass patina. The grips fit well and show 10% to 20% varnish with some natural aging and are absolutely original. All matching serial numbers with a good trace of blue beneath the loading lever and the action works well and is still tight. A very attractive Navy in far better than average condition and it would be interesting to research the markings as the pistol was made about 1857 in the height of the California gold rush.
