This is a representative example of an extensively restored Second Model Colt First Model 1851 Navy square back trigger guard revolver. The first approximately 4,200 Model 1851 Navy revolvers, (first and Second Model), were made with the square back trigger guard. The top of the barrel is marked with the early "-ADDRESS SAML COLT NEW YORK CITY-" address without the hyphen between the "NEW" and "YORK". The left side of the frame is re-marked "COLT'S/PATENT" and the cylinder is roll engraved with the Texas/Mexican naval scene as well as a restamped "COLT'S PATENT NO 2333". The complete matching serial number is marked on the loading lever, barrel, frame, trigger guard and back strap. The wedge is marked "33 and the arbor pin "333". Correct dovetailed nickel silver blade front and hammer notch rear sights, blue barrel and cylinder, silver plated trigger guard and back strap, and casehardened remaining parts. Fitted with a one-piece smooth ivory grip. Comes with an extra one-piece walnut grip.
BBL: 7 1/2 inch octagon
Stock:
Gauge: 36 percussion
Finish: blue/casehardened/silver
Grips: ivory
Serial Number: 2333
Condition: Very good as partially refinished and restamped. The barrel retains 60% thin blue finish with some minor pitting on the right side near the muzzle and several minor dings on the lug. The only number is refinished due to restamping. The cylinder has a smooth grayish patina with 50% of the scene visible. The trigger guard and back strap retain a strong 80% silver plating with a pleasant aged patina on the exposed brass. The remaining surfaces have a smooth silver gray patina with some original case colors on the right side of the frame. The sides of the hammer show heavy pitting. The grip is a bit undersized and remains good with a chip on the left heel and several hairline age cracks with a nice aged patina. The markings are clear. The action is tight. The extra grip is good as sanded and refinished. The toes are rounded and there are a few minor dings and chips in the varnish.
