Colt Model 1839 Paterson shotgun, 16 gauge, 32" barrel, in very good original condition, serial #26; 1 of less than 225 produced, making it among the rarest of all production Colts. An interesting endorsement came fromCapt. G. J. Raines, who wrote that Colt's shotgun was superior to muskets for Indian warfare, in a letter he wrote to Samuel Colt the day after he fired just such a gun. Refer "The Book of Colt Firearms" by R. L.Wilson, pages 52 and 53. The barrel shows 50-70% original brown, is toning evenly with sharp address on right side, some minor spotting and erosion just starting, but generally very good overall, with sharpedges. The cylinder has gone to a brown with a few areas of spotting, erosion and pinprick pitting just starting, and no visible scene. The frame and mounts are a good patina; the stock is very good+ with aselect grain and a few dents and mars, good wood to metal fit and most of its original varnish. The action is tight, numbers are matching. One of the lowest serial numbers known, lower than any published in our
