This model represents Colt's only attempt to compete with Winchester for the lever action rifle market. Approximately 2,500 carbines were made between 1883 and 1885. The top of the barrel ahead of the rear sight is marked with the two-line address/patent dates, the top of the lever loop is marked "BURGESS'S PATENTS" flanked by Maltese crosses and the serial number is marked on the lower tang directly behind the trigger. Block base front blade sight and folding ladder carbine rear sight graduated to 900 yards. Saddle ring and staple mounted on the left rear of the receiver, full magazine, blue finished with casehardened hammer and lever, and mounted with a smooth forearm secured with a single barrel band and straight grip stock with a steel crescent buttplate with compartment (cleaning rod not included).
BBL: 20 inch round
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 44-40
Finish: blue

Serial Number: 4990
Condition: Fair as refurbished. The barrel, magazine tube and lever have an artificial smooth mottled brown patina. The receiver is a mix of smooth brown and gray patina. The replaced rifle buttstock wood is good with a few overall scattered minor dings and scratches and the forearm is a non-factory replacement. Part of the patent date line on the barrel is not visible, otherwise the markings are readable. The action is very good.
