Colt “Baby Dragoon”, .31 cal., percussion revolver, #8592 with 5” barrel. The Colt remains in very good condition with traces of original finish showing a light old cleaning; the cylinder retains 30-50% lightoriginal scene with Colts Pt. visible; the backstrap and trigger guard show 60-80% darkened original silver. The grips show traces of varnish and even wear at edges and highpoints; markings are good. There is somescattered light pitting; all matching visible numbers; the one original safety pin is retained along with an original book entitled “Explorations in Nevada and Arizona” published by War Dept. 1871”. The Interior is inscribed in pen “Wm. Bixby U.S. (Illegible) Engineer” in same hand, rec’d from Engineer Dept. 1873 and shows Library of Congress, “Duplicate” stamp. The gun and book were sold to an antique dealer at the Reno Gun Showwho failed to get any family history other than they descended together in Northern California near Lake Tahoe in relatives of William Bixby by marriage with different surname who placed no importance on family
