Colt 2nd Model Dragoon, .44 caliber percussion revolver scroll engraved with silver over copper finish, one-piece ivory grips, inscribed in block letters on the back strap “Col. Carlos A. Waite, Dept. of Texas, 1861”, serial number 10055. Thisrevolver shows 50% to 70% of an old silver finish and the grips show cracking, natural aging and staining. The cylinder shows 90% plus cylinder scene and most of the safety pins are retained. The edges and markings are super sharp and crispand the bore is near excellent. The engraving, plating and grips are later than the original period of manufacture but look to be accomplished in the 19th to early 20th-century. A note from a prominent old time Pennsylvania collector statesthat “this pistol was shown to Herb Glass in 1981 and the conclusion was that it was an authentic Dragoon, later engraved and inscribed as a commemoration of service”. The consigner further states “after researching the extensive career ofCol Waite he concluded the arm may have been presented to him when he left Texas for Washington, D.C”. G.A.
