Colt 1860 Army revolver, .44 caliber percussion, 8” barrel, factory full fluted cylinder, serial #1553. With factory letter verifying features and shipment to William T. Martin, Natchez Mississippi, January 17th,1861, 160 guns in shipment. Letter further states ‘Furnished with 80 flasks, 80 holsters (probably double-saddle holsters), and 80 shoulder stocks’ indicating issuance in pairs. William Thompson Martin was born inKentucky and grew up in Mississippi. He raised the Adam’s County cavalry company and became its Captain. He fought in many early engagements and was merged into the Jeff Davis cavalry where he commanded. Martin held a stellar career and became an aid to Robert E. Lee and was promoted to Brigadier General December 2nd 1862, until he was sent West in March of 1863 commanding a division of Wheeler’s Cavalry. Wheeler argued with Martin and relieved him of his command. Martin ended the war commanding the district of Northwest Mississippi. He returned to Natchez and became involved in politics serving in the state legislature. In addition, he was
