A) Manufactured circa mid-1840s to 1849 with total quantity unknown. This pistol represents an enigma for today's collectors. This pistol was not officially adopted or issued as a government arm, and is thought to be a transitional piece between the last flintlock handgun (the Model 1836) and the first adopted percussion handgun (the Model 1842). The pistol is possibly the maker's attempt at obtaining a government contract. At first glance this pistol resembles a percussion converted Model 1836. However, this pistol was originally made as a percussion piece and has the distinguishing feature of a flat, flush fitted lock plate. It has a brass trigger guard, blade front sight, and side plate and swivel iron ramrod. The iron barrel band extends to the brass side plate. The lock plate is marked with an eagle head over "A.H. WATERS & Co. / MILLBURY MASS." over "49". The letter "V" is stamped in front of the trigger and "JH" on the left side of the barrel at the breech.

B) Manufactured from 1817 to 1820 by Simeon North of Middletown, Connecticut. The lock plate is marked "S. NORTH" in a downward curve over an American eagle motif with "U" and "S" at either side over the Middletown marking (traces of the marking remain). All iron mountings with a brass flash pan. Lock plate was casehardened with all other iron parts once finished brown. Complete with a wooden ramrod.
