Collector's Lot of Two Colt Double Barrel Shotguns with Custom Case -A) Colt Model 1878 Double Barrel Box Lock Hammer Shotgun with Factory Letter

A) Manufactured in 1879, the second year of production, this model was regarded as one of the finest shotguns made in America. Colt had trouble competing with the less expensive European imports of the day and stopped production after making only 22,690 shotguns from 1878 to 1889. Single brass bead sight on the smooth concave solid rib, which is absent of any markings, 2 3/4 inch chambers, the barrels choke at modified/modified with an extractor. Each lock is marked "Colt's Pt. F.A. Mfg. Co.", and the matching serial number is marked on the lower tang, water table and barrel lug. The barrels and trigger guard were blue and the remaining parts casehardened. Mounted with a checkered walnut splinter forearm with an ebony forend insert and round knob pistol grip stock with a steel buttplate. The accompanying factory letter verifies the gauge, barrel length, blue finish, "wood" stock, Grade 2 and that it was shipped as 1 to J.P. Moores Sons in New York on September 22 1879. Length of pull is 14 1/2 inches. Comes in a oak and pebble grain leather case which houses the two shotguns, two brass snap caps and a nickel oiler.

Mechanically fine. The case is very good with the latch on the lock missing.
