1) Antique envelope, measuring 6 by 4 inches, with a raised embossed scroll and floral designs, along with a scene of country courtship. A faint postmark is present in the upper right corner, a 3 cent stamp to the left, and "Duty Ballou/Porters Corners/Saratoga Co/N.Y" at center right. 2) Photo card, 2 3/8 by 3 7/8 inches, featuring a seated, elderly gentleman. The back is marked "Mrs. Van Housen,/HAMMONDSPORT,/N.Y./Negatives preserved.", as well as "D. Ballou" in pencil in the lower right corner. 3) Antique eyeglasses, brass wire frame construction with hinged temples and a brown leather lined case. 4) Lacquer finished hardwood case, black with gold trim, showing a scene of men standing around a table on the lid. Inside the lid is a shadow card marked "Captn Duty Ballou". The remaining items in this lot are contained in this case. 5) Copy of the General Regulation for The Army, from M. Carey & Sons of Philadelphia. 6) Leather covered hardwood box, 3 1/2 inches across, containing a small orange feather, a cloth and bullion flower, and a set of 15 plain buttons. 7) Shoulder boards, silver embroidered with silver bullion trim and tassels. The underside of one is marked "Ensign D. Ballou". Also included with the lot is a letter to Captain Ballou, dated 30 July 1836, ordering him to appear with the officers, NCO's and musicians of his (unnamed) Company for officer's drill and review, with a full (unnamed) Regimental Parade Inspection and Review to follow 3 days later. A genealogical search shows multiple men in the Saratoga region of New York named Duty Ballou, many of whom were veterans of American service from the Revolutionary War and War of 1812.

Condition: 1) Very good, with some foxing, tearing, and light stains. 2) Very good, with some brown and white spotting. 3) Fine, with a dark aged patina overall. The right temple is bent downward. 4) Good, with an absent handle, cracking, chips and a hole in the lid. 5) Fair, with the front cover absent, and extensive foxing. 6) Good, with some flaking. 7) Very good, with a few detached tassels and mild handling marks.
