Collection belonging to Gen. Angel Martinez, 1837-1889, who led the Macheteros. His career began in 1856 and he fought in many victorious battles including Sinaloa, Alamos, and throughout Sonora. Martinez capturedHermosillo many times where he captured and executed many Imperial officials. He ran for Governor of the State of Sinaloa and was defeated. Martinez traveled to San Francisco in 1870, onward to Paris, and joined thePrussian Army and fought during the Franco-Prussian War, then returned to Mexico in 1872 and became a Federal Representative for that state and later Senator in 1875. In 1876 he joined the Army and took over thegovernment of the state of Totosi. Martinez pursued an up-and-down career in politics and again became the leader of the Army in 1885 fighting the Yaqui Indians. He died in Colima in 1889. A copy of the Will of Catalina deTore, widow of Angel Martinez, mentions the name Sofia Wiesner who gave this collection to Dr. William A. Roberts in the late 1930’s at San Francisco, CA.
