A Colima phytomorphic pipe in the shape of a gourd or Yucca fruit, West Mexico, c. 150 BC - AD 250, with nicely burnished bowl and stem. This highly unusual design, reminiscent of a 'Flash Gordon' spaceship, shows much evidence of use and apparently was designed to be 'smoked with the nose' meaning that the user would gently puff on the pipe with the small, nipple-like mouthpiece to keep it lit but would inhale the sacred smoke through the nose which would have been directly over the open bowl. L: 4 3/4 in (9.5 cm). Intact and complete. Ex J.R. Collection.
