Clipped point Bowie knife marked Rose, New York with shell pommel and ivory grip retaining an antique scabbard. This exact knife is pictured in “The Bowie Knife” book by Norm Flayderman on page 337 and originally in this iconic experts personal collection. Also pictured page 202 of “Steel Canvas” by R.L. Wilson. Rose is considered one of the most important early makers and was a premier supplier to the early frontier and gold rush and this knife would date to about 1840. The knife measures 14 ½” overall with 10” single edge with clipped point and 4 ¼” false edge or clip. The markings are deeply stamped parallel to the blade and approximately 1” from the hilt on the left side. The knife shows genuine to the period one-piece ivory grips banded in German silver with matching pommel in a deep fluted shell design. The quillons on the cross guard terminate in ball finials. The blade is in good condition showing some normal use, minor pitting and erosion but is nearly its full dimensions with just a small amount of honest use, wear and slight sharpening. The ivory grip scales shows some cracking and slight normal aging. The guard, hilt and pommel show a nice patina. The scabbard is a good fit and retains throat and tip but missing its hanger. The scabbard is in good condition. An important early Rose with deluxe ivory and great provenance. Est.: $17,500-$35,000.
