Classic William Chance & Son Northwest Trade percussion gun, .62 cal., 36” barrel, full maple stock with tombstone fox cartouche on right side of butt stock and fox over IA proof on lockplate; heavy brown patina to metal surfaces with pitting at firing areas, W. Chance & Son marking on lockplate, overall well-worn but good stock with great patina and some minor losses; characteristic brass dragon side plate, working action, brass butt plate. Chance & Son manufactured guns in London from 1830-1860, and was a major supplier for the American Fur Co. from 1834-45. Previously in the famous Ernie Cowles collection and pictured and described on pages 52 and 53 of “The Northwest Indian Trade Gun Collection of Ernie Cowles” by Paul Fridlund, a copy of which is included with this lot.
