Civil War-associated E. Whitney Navy percussion revolver, .36 cal., 7-1/2” octagon barrel, wood grips, #5348, descended in the family of Henry B. Barber, who served in Co. A, 7th Illinois Cavalry, with folder including his original dischargepaper, recorded Oct. 20th, 1866, an original photo of Barber in later life (in his “Sunday best”), an 1884 dated U.S. Morgan silver dollar with two old bullet holes which according to family tradition, resulted from Henry tossing the coin in the air and shooting it with this pistol years after his service plus information on the 7th Ill. Cavalry and Corporal Barber who enlisted on August 10, 1861 as a Private and served until mustering out on October 15, 1864. The 7th foughtin Southern campaigns; most notably in “Grierson’s Raid” where a small mobile force of 6th and 7th Illinois and 2nd Iowa cavalrymen under the command of Colonel B.H. Grierson ranged thru Tennessee disrupting Confederate supply lines andcommunications; at one time fighting without support, the entire force of legendary Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest.
