This is an example of a Type I Model 1863 Rifle-Musket with barrel bands secured with screws and three leaf rear sight. The rear of the lock plate is correctly dated "1863" with an "eagle/shield" and "U.S./SPRINGFIELD" stamped ahead of the hammer. An additional "eagle/shield" is stamped on the bolster. Barrel is also dated 1863 and has "V/P/eagle head" proofs. Full length stock stamped with two clear cartouches on the left flat and fitted with "US" marked buttplate. The socket bayonet is marked "US/J." The rifle has a wood muzzle plug.

Fine as restored. The lock plate has a smooth dark patina and the hammer retains 20% of the case colors. The remaining metal surfaces have an attractive bright appearance. The reoiled wood is fine with a hairline crack near the rear of the lock plate. Mechanically excellent.
