This is a representative example of a Second Model (also known as the "Model 1863"), Maynard carbine that was manufactured circa 1860 to 1865, with approximately 20,000 total production. Among the Union cavalry regiments armed with these Maynards were the 9th and 11th Indiana and the 11th Tennessee. Three line "MASS. ARMS CO." address on the right front of the frame and four line "1851/1859" Maynard patent marking on the left side. 3 3/4 inches of the breech end of the barrel is octagon and the left side flat is marked with the inspectors initials "G.W.S". The barrel, hammer, trigger and buttplate were blue, and the frame and lever casehardened. It is equipped with a pinched front sight and a two leaf folding rear sight. There is a saddle ring bar and ring mounted on the left side of the receiver. The stock is a straight grip with no forearm and the left side wrist is marked with two clear boxed "JM" cartouches, and it has an iron carbine buttplate.

Condition: Good. The barrel has a dark patina with overall minor pitting. The receiver has a mottled silver gray patina with overall minor pitting. There is a smooth dark patina on the lever and the buttplate has a brown patina with minor pitting. The slightly undersize stock is very good with a few deep scratches and a few minor dings with clear cartouches. The markings are clear. The action is excellent.
