Civil War U.S. Remington Model 1863 Percussion Rifle with Sword Bayonet
Remington Model 1863 "Zouave" Percussion Rifle manufactured in 1863. The rifle has a heavy blued barrel, casehardened lock, hammer, and barrel tang, brass forearm tip, barrel bands, trigger guard, patch box and buttplate with oil finished, black walnut stock. The rifle is fitted with a straight shank iron ramrod with tulip head. The barrel has an iron front sight, two position rear sight and is fitted with a lug on the right side for the sword bayonet. The lock plate is dated "1863" behind the hammer and marked with a small Eagle and Shield above" "REMINGTON'S/ILLION N.Y. in front of the hammer. "U.S." is stamped towards the front of the lock plate. The barrel is stamped with: "US/VP/EAGLE HEAD GP", proof and inspection marks next to the bolster and "STEEL" followed by the sub-inspector marks "B.H." on the left flat. Two script, oval, Ordnance inspection marks are stamped on the left stock flat. Single letter sub-inspection marks are visible on most components. "U.S." is stamped on the heel of the buttplate. The rifle is complete with the original sword bayonet and scabbard issued with Model 1863 Rifles. The bayonet has a bright-finished, 20-inch fullered blade with cast brass handle with downturned quillion. The handle is stamped with the same "B.H." inspection marks as the rifle barrel and has the same small "S" sub-inspection marks as the rifle. The scabbard has a black leather body with brass throat and tip. An improved version of the U.S. Model 1855 Harpers Ferry Rifle, the Model 1863 Rifle was the last percussion rifle purchased and issued by the U.S. Army.

Condition: Fine. The barrel retains 30% of the faded original blue finish with some thinning. The lock plate and hammer have a faded gray casehardened finish. There is heavy age discoloration on the hammer and some scattered discoloration on the lock plate. The brass furniture is untouched and has an attractive mustard yellow age patina. The stock is in very good condition with light handling wear and several deeper scratches on the left side of the wrist. The edges of the flats are sharp and the Ordnance inspection marks are legible. The bayonet is in very good condition with most of the original bright finish on the blade and some discoloration on the handle. The scabbard is in good condition with an old repair on the leather body just ahead of the brass tip.
