This is an example of a U.S. Army Spencer Model 1860 rifle manufactured circa 1863-1864. The front sight doubles as lug for socket type bayonet, with a folding ladder rear sight calibrated to 800 yards. The top of the action is marked "SPENCER REPEATING/RIFLE CO. BOSTON MASS./PAT'D MARCH 6 1860." There is a small "H" stamped on the left rear of the barrel. Mounted with a standard military style stock and forearm with three barrel bands and forend tip. There are two visible boxed cartouches on the left stock wrist.
BBL: 30 inch round

Serial Number: 9857
Condition: Very good. The barrel retains 80% original thin blue finish with areas fading to a smooth plum, and showing some light spotting. The hammer, lever and power tang have a smooth mottled gray patina. The receiver and buttplate show a bright metal appearance. The wood has been refinished, remaining very good with sharp cartouches, a few overall scattered minor dings and handling marks. The markings are clear. The action is fine.
