Civil War Sharps New Model 1863 Saddle Ring Carbine
The Sharps Carbine was the most widely issued and important Federal Civil War cavalry carbine. This New Model 1863 Carbine has a military blue barrel, casehardened receiver, hammer, lever, barrel band and buttplate with an oil finished walnut stock and forearm. The barrel is fitted with a Lawrence patent folding leaf sight graduated to 800 yards. The straight breech receiver has the Sharps pellet priming system and a sling bar and ring on the left side. The late pattern stock lacks the patch box fitted to earlier models. The top of the barrel has the Sharps markings between the rear sight and barrel band, "NEW MODEL 1863" located between the rear sight and the receiver and the left rear flat is marked "EAW". The lock plate is marked with the R.S. Lawrence 1859 and the Sharps 1852 patent dates. The Sharps 1848 patent date is on the left side of the receiver. The serial number is located on the top of the receiver tang. The sling bar base and top of the stock in front of the tang are stamped "A.W.M." and the buttplate tang is stamped with the letter "M".

Condition: Fine. The barrel retains 40% original blue finish mixed with smooth plum patina. Traces (20%) of the original case colors remain on the lock plate under the hammer and protected area of the left side of the receiver and much of the original casehardening pattern remaining on the balance. The barrel band and lever have a smooth mottled gray patina. The wood is also fine. With the exception of some minor splintering along the upper rear edge of the forearm and a moderate dent on top of the comb (front), there are some minor dents and scratches. All markings are crisp and clear. The action is excellent. A fine representative Civil War Sharps carbine!
