Produced between 1862 and 1865, this is possibly one of less than 7000 carbines purchased by the Navy for use by Marines aboard ships. This particular carbine is absent of the distinctive black leather cover that was intended to minimize the barrel's exposure to salt water air, and the barrel has been shortened to its present length. Blade front and elevator rear sights on the barrel with the screw holes in the breech end of the barrel for securing the leather cover. The right side of the receiver is marked: "SHARPS / & / HANKINS / PHILDA." and the left side is marked: "SHARPS/ PATENT/ 1859". There is a saddle ring and staple mounted on the left rear of the receiver and the safety has been removed. Matching numbers present on the upper tang, bottom of the barrel, frame, the lever is numbered "4332" and the lever bar "6200". Mounted with a smooth straight grip stock with a brass buttplate and sling swivel.

Condition: Period refurbished by the arsenal. All metal surfaces have a dark patina with minor pitting on the barrel and frame. A small piece of the tip of the trigger guard/lever spur is broken off. The buttplate has an aged patina. The frame screws are marred. The rear sight arm is loose and will not lock into the range settings. The stock is good with a few minor dings and dents. The markings are clear. Mechanically fine.
