This is a Second Type Merrill carbine dated 1863. The breech lever is marked with the serial number along with the two line 1858 patent date and the underside is marked with the number "7/90". The lock plate has the date "1863" behind the hammer and the American eagle with the three line patent date in front of the hammer. The top of the barrel at the breech and the rear top comb of buttstock both have the inspector initials "TKL". Brass fittings, with iron sling bar and ring on the left side of the stock. Blade front sight and three leaf rear sight. Smooth stock with two cartouches stamped on the left stock flat and "U.S." marked buttplate.

Condition: Very good. The bright finely aged metal has very crisp markings. The moderately worn stock is also very good with a couple shallow dings near the trigger guard. Mechanically fine.
