This is a Second Type Merrill carbine. The lock plate is marked "J.H.MERRILL BALTO. /PAT JULY 1858,/APL.9. MAY 21-28-61". Blade front and three leaf rear (broken second leaf) sights. Matching serial number on lock and breech lever. The breech lever is stamped with the two line 1858 patent date. The single barrel band, trigger guard and unmarked buttplate are brass. Straight grip stock without a patchbox and a saddle bar (without ring) mounted on the left side.

Condition: Poor. The carbine has a smooth crisp brown patina showing some minor pitting (mostly on the lock plate). The sanded crude period replacement stock has large pieced in wood repair on the buttstock (right side) and a few minor handling marks.
