One of the main cavalry carbines of the Union Army during the Civil War, the Gallager carbines that survived the war were procured en-masse by the French for use in the Franco-Prussian War. Blade front and 2-leaf rear sights, with "D" stamped ahead of the rear sight and "J.M.D" behind. Casehardened frame and lock plate, marked "GALLAGER'S PATENT/JULY 17Th 1860" and "MANUFACTd BY/RICHARDSON & OVERMAN/PHILADa/23286". Smooth straight grip stock, with a "WHB" inspection cartouche on the left side, "N" on the comb, steel patch box lid and a smooth buttplate.

Condition: Fine, with 60% of the original blue finish, showing areas of brown patina, mild spotting and scattered handling marks. Strong case colors remain on the protected areas of the frame, with a mixed brown and gray patina overall. Stock is very good as revarnished, with clear cartouche, some cracking of the varnish and light dents. Mechanically fine.
