Manufactured by Richardson & Overman with approximately 5,000 produced in Spencer 56-52 caliber and at least half of these carbines were bought as surplus by France for the Franco-Russian War circa 1870. The carbine has a 22 1/4 inch blue barrel and casehardened frame, hammer, lever, buttplate and patch box. The stock is oil-finished black walnut. The lock has the two line Gallager patent marking and the three line Richardson & Overman marking over the serial number. Pinched blade and two leaf sights, with a saddle ring bar and ring mounted on the left stock wrist. The left side of the wrist has two clear script cartouches (WHB and ALN).

Condition: Fine as arsenal refurbished/converted. The barrel retains 50% original blue finish with the balance a mottled gray patina with some patches of surface rust. The remaining metal surfaces retain 40% case colors. Front sight has been re-positioned. The stock is very fine with some very scattered minor handling marks.
