Manufactured by H. Merrill of Baltimore, Maryland, Merrill carbines were issued to Union cavalry regiments in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Indiana, Wisconsin and Kentucky. This particular carbine is a First Type variation with the lock marked with the serial number and "J.H. MERRILL BALTO/PAT. JULY 1858/APL. 9 MAY 21-26-61". The top of the breech lever is marked "J.H. MERRILL BALTO/PAT. JULY 1858" and the matching serial number at the rear. Blade front sight, three leaf folding rear sight, single brass barrel band and mounted with a one-piece straight grip stock with sharply tapered forend, saddle ring bar and ring mounted on left stock flat and brass patch box and carbine buttplate.

Condition: Fair. The carbine has a smooth dark patina with minor pitting. The breech lever retains traces of original case colors in the protected areas. The brass has a smooth patina. The repaired cracked wrist stock is fair with a hand marked "M" on the buttstock and a number of pressure dents and scratches. Mechanically fine.
