Included in this lot is a Civil War snare drum. Drums were a vital part to both sides during the civil war. They would convey orders like a charge or retreat during battle when verbal commands could not be heard through the cannon and musket fire. Most drums were used by young boys who joined either cause. These drums often saw time on the front lines aiding in precision movements, but they also were used to wake up soldier at dawn, in drills and for campfire concerts. This drum features a maple construction with stretched hide head. The batter heads are constructed from maple and painted blue with stars. The braided ropes are in good condition showing signs of wear and have the leather ears attached. The batters have come loose from their original mounting points and the wood has moved making it difficult to move back. Overall the snare drum shows great condition and patina for its Civil War age. The drum has a 16 ¼” diameter and measures 10 ½” tall.
