Civil War Burnside Breech Loading Percussion Carbine
Manufactured by the Burnside Rifle Co., in Providence, Rhode Island, 5th Model Carbines were purchased by the Ordnance Department circa 1863-1865. The barrel is equipped with a blade front and a two leaf folding rear sight, with "CAST STEEL 1864" on the top, and the top of the frame is marked: "BURNSIDE PATENT/MODEL OF 1864" in two lines. The right side of the receiver tang is marked: "BURNSIDE RIFLE Co./PROVIDENCE, R.I." in two lines. The Ordnance inspector and sub-inspector's rectangular script cartouches are stamped on the left side of the stock wrist.

Condition: Very fine, with 70% of the original blue finish, with areas of brown patina forming on the barrel, a mixed color on the barrel band and scattered handling marks. Bright case colors are visible on the frame, strongest around the saddle ring bar and in the protected areas. Stock is also very fine, with a few chips absent the forearm and light scattered scuffs and dings. Mechanically excellent.
